American Crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) resting under mangroves.  Florida Everglades.

Highly distinct from the American Alligator, the American Crocodile is critically endangered, a victim of rampant human population growth and development in South Florida.  A denizen of the more saline parts of the Everglades environment, and dependent upon adequate, sandy beaches for nesting sites, its critical habitat has--with very few exceptions--been largely destroyed.
